The stat bonuses from the spell make up for the less damage (although past about 30 defence, the spell will do more than t5/6). (for others mostly, as I'm sure you already know why it's a good set) The set gets you just under the 43 def to block 85% of of 50 damage, the most common damage shot in the game.
